If you are a parent who speaks Pashto, Dari, Ukrainian, Karen, Burmese, Spanish, or Arabic, how do you help your child get ready to go to kindergarten? It’s certainly a challenge! For the last two Fridays, Pam Henager has taught Ready! for Kindergarten classes to mothers and fathers from more than six different countries.
The classes give families tools and techniques to help their children be ready to start kindergarten at age 5. For many years, the FLC has partnered with the Kennewick School District and the Children’s Reading Foundation to provide toys, books, and other tools to the parents we serve. In the class, parents are able to see and experience how to help their children grow in literacy, math, and social skills. Parents can learn English along with their children.
This fall, we served parents of 26 pre-school kids, who all went home with new ways to raise children who will be Ready!
Thank you to our partners at Kennewick School District, The Mid-Columbia Reading Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Club (where we have classes). Special thanks to the brave parents who learned how to be even better teachers of their children.
Ready! classes are available online to all parents in the Kennewick School District, and are offered in English and Spanish. The program is also available to families in the Pasco School District.
